“Insulin Salad”

Scientists have managed to create insulin from lettuce that can be taken without injections

The hormone was isolated from a genetically modified lettuce that contains three peptides from natural insulin. This substance can be taken orally without injections, which will greatly simplify the life of people with type 1 diabetes. Especially children and the elderly who are scared or difficult to give daily injections on their own.

“Insulin salad” is not broken down in the stomach – thanks to the cell walls of lettuce, insulin reaches the intestines, where it is already released by bacteria and can enter the liver. In addition, this method is cheaper to produce due to savings on laboratory equipment and storage.
