Purification of cotton protein from gossypol

Scientists in Singapore have found a way to purify the protein of cotton flour obtained after the extraction of cottonseed oil from gossypol, an inhibitor of a number of dehydrogenase enzymes.

Analysis of the amino acid composition of cotton flour protein showed a high content of BCAAs (branched chain amino acids). The allergenicity of the isolate showed low values.

Interestingly, gossypol has antiviral, antimicrobial, antiprotozoal, antioxidant properties, and antitumor activity. However, its use can lead to irreversible infertility.
