Effect of Antioxidants on Microbiome Composition

The figure shows a graphical representation of the influence of various antioxidants on the composition of the gut microbiome.

The bulk of bacteria in the intestinal cavity comes from the three phyla Bacteroidetes, Firmicutes and Actinobacteria, which account for almost 98 percent of all microorganisms.

A study published in JFF demonstrated that dietary antioxidants such as carotenoids, polyphenols, vitamin C, vitamin E, zinc, and selenium have excellent beneficial effects on the gut microbiota.
