Therapeutic nutrition awaits change

The Kommersant publication conducted its own research on the current situation in the medical nutrition market. Experts unanimously urge to actively engage in its import substitution.

The Association of the Eurasian Council of the Industry of Specialized Food Products estimates the number of patients in need of clinical nutrition at more than 1 million people. Half of them, according to its head, Yuri Zubarev, are on outpatient treatment.

Unlike special nutrition as an addition to the diet of patients, therapeutic nutrition is intended for those patients whose diet cannot be made up of ordinary products, including vitamin and mineral supplements, protein and other supplements.

In some cases, specialized medical nutrition is the only source of food for adult patients or has a decisive influence on the normal development of children with certain diseases and conditions. For young patients, this is a matter of life and death.

At the same time, more than 70% of the needs of the medical nutrition market are provided by imported products, and the good news for patients is that the import of medical nutrition products is not directly affected by the sanctions.

In parallel, this year, Russian manufacturers showed a steady increase in production. However, for a full-fledged import substitution, there is not enough of an entire industry for the production of high-quality raw materials. Such production was lost after the collapse of the USSR.

One of the bottlenecks for the production of medicinal products, including for children, is the presence of highly mineralized whey DS-90, emphasizes an expert in the field of functional nutrition of the Federal Scientific Center for Food Systems. V. M. Gorbatova Alexandra Surzhik.
