Prospects for neonatal screening were discussed by Russian immunologists

From 2023, Russia will launch an expanded neonatal screening program. This issue was discussed by leading immunologists, pediatricians, and geneticists on June 28 at a meeting in the press center of the МИА «Россия сегодня». As part of the screening, the number of tested diseases will increase from 5 to 36.

A group of diseases associated with primary immunodeficiencies will be added. This is a group of disorders caused by defects in various parts of the immune system, which manifest themselves clinically most often in the form of infectious and autoimmune diseases of varying severity, as well as malignant neoplasms. Severe forms of primary immunodeficiency led to infections, sepsis, and death in the first two years of a child’s life. Less severe forms cause irreversible changes in the body, significantly reducing the quality of human life, and lead to disability. According to general estimates, up to 1% of the population suffers from immunodeficiencies.
