The EEC told how to correctly indicate flavors in the name of dairy products

If a flavoring agent is used in the composition of food products, the name of the component replaced by this flavoring agent and not part of the product may be included in the name using the words “with taste” or “with aroma”. This was reported to Milknews in the National Union of Milk Producers (Союзмолоко) with reference to the clarifications received from the Department of Technical Regulation and Accreditation of the EEC.

“For example, if an apple is not used for the preparation of food products, but the flavoring “apple” is used, then the name of the specified food products can be formed from the words “… with apple flavor” and (or) “… with apple flavor”,” the EEC clarifications say.

The department also noted that if the flavoring component “vanillin” is included in the composition of food products, “we believe it is possible to use the name of food products “Curd cheese with vanilla” or “Curd cheese with vanilla flavor”.

Thus, Союзмолоко explained, an end has been put to the disputes over the different interpretation of the norm by manufacturers and networks: “Retail chains, fearing inspections, often refused to purchase products from manufacturers who indicated the name of the flavor on the label. For example, glazed cheeses, on the packaging of which “vanillin” was indicated, turned out to be in “disgrace” with some networks that required the phrase “vanilla-flavored” to be placed. From the point of view of manufacturers, the indication on the packaging of the name of the flavor is correct, which is confirmed by the explanations of the EEC.”
