Forecast for an alternative to meat products

GFI suggested that by 2030, plant-based meat products will predominantly use the same ingredients as they do now, and in the current market, about 62% of such products are made from wheat and soy. Since these crops are grown on a huge scale, only 2% of the total volume of wheat and soybeans will go to meat analogues. However, the industry may need up to three times more soy protein concentrate, indicating a need to expand intermediate processing capacity for this plant, GFI notes.

However, the alternative meat industry may need 10 times more protein from peas by 2030 than current production forecasts for this ingredient. Accordingly, pea production will need to be increased by at least 28%.

The authors of the report recall breeding approaches that will help increase the protein content in peas. Selection methods can also be used to increase protein in other crops, according to GFI.

GFI is also encouraging ingredient manufacturers and suppliers to explore other possible sources of plant-based proteins in legumes, oilseeds, vegetables, nuts, and grains.
