Food and Drug Administration


The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is responsible for protecting public health by ensuring that products intended for humans and animals are safe, effective and secure.

The FDA controls the production and circulation of:

medicines

products of biological origin

medical devices

food,

cosmetics

products that emit radiation.

The FDA is responsible for advancing public health by helping to accelerate innovation in the medical and food industries. The FDA promotes public education about the proper use of medical and nutritional products to maintain and improve health.

The FDA is an agency within the US Department of Health and Human Services. It consists of the Commissioner’s Office and four directorates overseeing the agency’s main functions: medical device and tobacco control, food and veterinary medicine control, administration of affairs and policy, and an executive office.

FDA responsibilities extend to the 50 United States, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, Guam, the Virgin Islands, American Samoa, and other US territories and possessions.
