Vitamin and mineral complexes for athletes: for what, to whom and how

IUD for athletes is a combination of vitamins and minerals, in which the dosage of nutrients is increased.
Why do athletes need multivitamins? In short – so that the body does not need anything.
Vladimir Sudarev, a nutritionist, lecturer at the Center for Nutrition and Adaptive Nutrition, told us in more detail about sports vitamin and mineral complexes. We analyze the topic in four questions.

– Why do sports IUDs have large dosages of substances?
– Athletes have higher daily energy expenditures. Therefore, in order to maintain the chemical balance of the diet, there is a need for higher concentrations of vitamins and minerals.
The second point is that athletes consume more refined foods that are poor in vitamins and minerals: starchy foods such as potatoes, pasta, white rice, ordinary bread made from premium flour…
The need for nutrients is also increased by substrate sports supplements; carbohydrate (for example, maltodextrin, amylopectin); added sugars in the diet also “forces” you to take increased dosages of vitamins and minerals.
But it should be noted that extremely high dosages are not welcome: sports vitamins do not always have adequate dosages for athletes.

– Can a coach “prescribe” multivitamins to an athlete without a doctor?
– In addition to a coach, a sports team must have a sports doctor, and ideally a dietitian. On the packaging of any dietary supplement, there is an indication that it should be taken only after consulting a doctor. It is important. There is no need for a coach to take on such a responsibility.

– How to drink vitamin and mineral complexes for athletes – continuously or in courses?
– The intake of vitamin and mineral complexes should be regular, that is, all year round. At the same time, it is important that the appointments go according to the loads and correspond to the type of sport and the individual needs of the body – that is, they should be prescribed by the doctor after the tests, with a regular check-up.

– Is it possible to take sports multivitamins for people with little physical activity and minimal physical training?
– Ordinary people with great physical activity, but not athletes (with minimal physical training, without extended daily energy expenditure, exercising less than 5-6 times a week) take sports vitamins not only is not necessary, but even dangerous.
